Today marks 11 years since the world lost Aaliyah.

On August 25, 2001, Aaliyah along with eight others were killed in a plane crash after filming the music video “Rock the Boat.” It was a devastating loss of a young artist that was just coming into her own. Many still speculate what she could have done, if she had lived. Would she have been the next Janet Jackson?

In the last month, Aaliyah has been appearing in the news after it was revealed that Drake would be releasing an album of unreleased tracks. With both Missy andTimbaland both denying any knowledge of or plans to participate in this release, a lot of very strong feelings about the appropriateness of this release have been shared. Our own community has been very vocal with us on this topic. Here’s was one of our followers on Twitter had to say about it:

Yesterday, we asked our Black Voices community members to share their favorite songs. We got hundred of replies and we did a video list below of many of the songs you told us you loved, along with some rare interviews.

Help us remember Aaliyah today. Share your favorite memories and songs in the comments. If you were rocking the side swept bangs, low slung jeans with boxers peeking out and sunglasses in high school because you were such a big fan, let us know that too. Also, let us know your thoughts on this new album with Drake. Is it appropriate?

Was the Milwaukee gunman a lone, misguided individual or a member of one of the growing white supremacist groups in the U.S.?

Either way, hate is gaining momentum in this country. White supremacy in the U.S. is monitored by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a movement of various hate groups, with more than 1,000 active groups in America and growing steadily.

White supremacy is certainly not only a U.S. problem. Today, many places in Europe, South Africa, Latin America and elsewhere are struggling with the issue as well. Some of history’s darkest chapters include human extermination based on race, and many of these ethnic conflicts and “cleansings” continue today, despite the famous “never again” promises of the United Nations.

However, here in the U.S., we have an upsurge of white supremacy to deal with that many people still do not fully understand.
